Exciting New Zealand Companies are now having their story told in an exclusive web club ExcitingCompanies.co.nz.
SearchMasters has built and SEO'ed the website using the JOJO cms product.
The technical parts:
- two instances of the article/blog plugin - one for the public, and another for the subscriber only articles
- extensive use of tags to categorise the articles
- categorisation of the tags to allow for use with a drop down search box.
- a subscription system that allows for yearly, monthly, and single report downloads.
- custom fields on the articles pages for the subscriber only PDF downloads, data boxes, and pictures.
- large action boxes for people to take the next step after they have seen the website.
- getting approved by World Pay and programming the site for it
- Google analytics on the thankyou page for subscriptions
- Further developments include releasing an affiliate package for the website. It is complicated by the fact that the thank-you page for payment is housed on the WorldPay system - we have to send the affiliate cookie/variable into the offsite pages.
It has been interesting to see Google's treatment of the site when we first released it:
- The site has been live for several months as we have been developing it. We have had a small number of pages of the site available to the search engines to "age" the site.
- The site got large number of visits the first days that we made available all the public articles. This was the "new news" effect of new pages getting a temporary boost on the search results.
- Then the hits have since gone to virtually nothing.
- The site has to get a number of inbound links, and start aging before it is able to start ranking properly for the hundreds of pages on the site.
- It will be interesting to see how long it takes for the internal/article pages to rank well.
- Google has picked some 'interesting' pages for various search phrases relevant to the website. The pages it has picked have not been in our minds the most appropriate pages - there have been better optimised pages available for some search phrases. However, this is a common situation with new websites. New pages have yet to be properly found. Internal links into the pages from other pages within the website have yet to be factored in. Once some more time has passed, and the ExcitingCompanies is receiving some external links into articles within the website, more appropriate pages will be picked by Google, and those pages will be ranked better on Google.
- An interesting SEO strategy - seek to rank well for other companies names. Anyone searching for companies for whom articles have been written, will be able to find the exciting companies pages. This creates a big long tail of search. Many people will find out about the Exciting Companies website who would not have found it by its main search phrase of "New Zealand Companies"
- The site is also a sales pitch for the Strategic and Market Research abilities of New River Consultants. There are only so many people searching for "New Zealand Market Research", but with another site that has so many articles and possibilities for being found on Google, the marketing reach of the website and cross sell to New River is greatly extended.
