How much traffic will top of Google get?Update 26/10/11

From 2nd to 1st - 10.05% to 18.2% - 81% increase
From 3rd to 2nd - 7.22% to 10.05% - 39% increase
From 3rd to 1st - 7.22% to 18.2% - 152% increase - 2.5 times the traffic!
From 4th to 3rd - 4.81% to 7.22% - 50% increase

An advertising network Chitika published results of traffic into its network, and found some interesting numbers as to amount of traffic each position gets from Google.From second (17%) to first (34%) ought to get you twice the traffic. From third (11%) to second (17%) should get you 49% more traffic
But 34% of what? This question has two parts to it:
- what is 100% - in the table below, 100% is the total of the top 20 results. However, we know that there are additional links on Google search results. ie Google places map results, and possibly 10+ Google sponsored results. Each of these will get clicks.
- a percentage of what total traffic? Via the Google search phrase tool, you can find out the specific traffic for each search phrase.
So it is not possible to just multiply 34% x the Google search phrase tool and get an idea of traffic for a search phrase. I have found another Google organic click through rate study by SEOMad that notes the traffic to Google organic search is around 65% as compared to paid search 35%. But then there is the complication of Google local map listings.
At least we now have some evidence about the traffic increases we can get through having higher placings for clients. See the "increase in traffic each position" column. I have added another column for the SEOMad findings.
Another interesting change is how Google is displaying results on its page as of the last month or so. There are now new links on the left, and alternate phrases offered. This is further diluting the benefit of achieving first or any place on Google.
The SEO Mad figures show a 6.5 times increase in traffic from 10th to 1st place, as compared to the Chikita figures that show a 12.7 times increase.

Thank you so much for sharing. There are a few other reports similar to this. Maybe they variety since I saw in other reports that 1st position gets 42% of traffic but anyway in the end it all back to how difference #1 position can make.
