Jun 8, 2012Google started the year with a bang, issuing webmaster tools notices to hundreds of thousands of websites in January and February 2012.
I needed a place to record the exact dates of the updates, so I can better check traffic fluctuations in client sites and so know what update is the most likely cause of the issues.
There have been continuing 'Panda' updates, and a newer 'Penguin' update that has had the most effect on websites.
21 August 2012 - regarding panda and penguin refreshes
Jan 2012 - Google Webmaster Tools notices of detected unnatural links from websites (notices on websites giving the links)
25 Feb 2012 - Google Webmaster Tools notice of detected unnatural links to websites (notices on the websites receiving the links)
1 April 2012 - Google Webmaster Tools - "Quality issues" with websites
24 April 2012 - first 'Penguin' update
25 May 2012 - Penguin 2 update - Penguin algo data refresh
The updates are ongoing.
We are stuck between a rock and a hard place. With onpage SEO only, websites are ranking higher, but not to their best. With additional incoming links, the websites are ranking well. But if linking is overdone in any way, rankings are effected... A tightrope to walk.
